El Pit – The Deepest and Most Spectacular Cenote in the Riviera Maya
Cenote El Pit is a breathtaking sinkhole dive located near Tulum in the heart of the Riviera Maya. Formed by the natural collapse of the cave ceiling due to centuries of water erosion, El Pit is famous for its dramatic depth, crystal-clear visibility, and unique underwater phenomena.
Access to the cenote is via a steep staircase that leads to a diving platform. A pulley system for dive gear is available for a small additional fee. The site offers essential amenities such as bathrooms, showers, and tables for equipment setup.
With a maximum depth of 120 meters, El Pit is the deepest cenote in the region and should be done as the first dive of the day to take advantage of the stunning sunbeam effects created as natural light filters through the entrance.
At around 15 meters, divers encounter a mesmerizing halocline, where fresh and saltwater layers meet. Descending deeper to 30 meters, you’ll pass through a ghostly hydrogen sulfide cloud, where sunken trees emerge eerily from the mist. The cavern ceiling is adorned with ancient stalactites, and divers may even spot prehistoric sloth bones fossilized within the rock formations.
Due to its depth, thermoclines, and limited visibility zones, El Pit is recommended only for advanced and experienced divers with excellent buoyancy control and deep diving certification.
Dive Dos Ojos Cenote – Shallow Cavern Diving in a World-Class Underwater System
Dos Ojos, meaning “Two Eyes” in Spanish, is one of the most iconic cenote diving sites in the Riviera Maya, located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It gets its name from the two adjacent, circular cenotes that resemble a pair of eyes when viewed from above.
All dives begin and end in the “First Eye”, which serves as the main entrance to the cenote system. This setup allows for two different shallow cavern dives, giving divers extended bottom time to enjoy the site’s exceptional visibility, incredible rock formations, and breathtaking natural light effects.
One of the most popular routes is the Barbie Line, a comfortable cavern dive with a maximum depth of 6–7 meters. Divers follow a permanent guideline that brings them up close to spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and other limestone formations. Midway through the dive, the playful origin of the route’s name becomes clear, offering both beauty and charm.
Dos Ojos Park features convenient amenities such as bathrooms, showers, equipment tables, small gift shops, and a restaurant with snacks and drinks, making it a perfect day trip destination for divers and non-divers alike.
With its shallow depth, surreal scenery, and crystal-clear conditions, Dos Ojos is ideal for certified divers looking to experience one of Mexico’s most famous cavern dives, while always keeping safety at the forefront.
